Mt. Bromo's status is increased to "Alert", on November 17th 2015. Mt. Bromo's smoke is white and thin. It reaches 50 to 100 meters above the top of the crater. The smell of sulfur is light to heavy. Rumbling sounds are weak to moderate.
Mt. Bromo's status changed to "Alert"
Based on reports from the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Mt. Bromo its status is increased to "Alert". The head of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, dr. ir. Ayu Dewi Utari, recommends to stay as far as 1 km from Mt. Bromo's crater. In particular, don't climb the crater. This advice is written and posted at all entrances to the National Park Bromo-Tengger-Semeru. Visitors still can visit Mt. Penanjakan, the Sea of Sand and the savanna.
For the sake of security, all visitors are kindly asked to act in accordance with this advice. The alert status of the volcano stands at 2 ("alert") on a scale of 1 to 4.
Despite advice many visitors still climb the crater
Mt. Bromo erupts on average every 3 years. It is an very active and therefor dangerous volcano. Despite the warnings of Ayu Dewi Utari, many local and international visitors still climb the crater. An active volcano can erupt any time without a more significant warning as it status of today.
Bromo’s last major eruption, in January 2011, forced some international airlines to cancel flights to Bali.
